How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
