Organic gardening is the best method to grow vegetables, ornamental and flower plants. Following the principles of organic agriculture, this form of farming uses organic fertilizers, pest management, and soil building. This method preserves heirloom varieties. This type of gardening is a great way to reduce food and water bills while also promoting health and the environment. Organic vegetables are not the only option. It is possible to grow other types of plants with minimal effort.

The first step in organic gardening is knowing how to get rid of pests. This is best done by using companion plants. This type plant will both repel pests as well as enhance the flavor and health of your plants. Two of the most popular companion plants for tomatoes are basil and amaranth. Both of these plants can help tomatoes grow faster and protect them against disease. Certain plants can be more difficult to grow than other. Plants that are both hardy and easy for those with limited knowledge should be chosen by those who don't have much experience in gardening.

Understanding your soil's structure is another important step to gardening organically. You must choose the best plants for your locale. Most gardens have a gradient in soil quality, light/moisture daily and temperature. This will ensure that your plants are healthy, happy, and well-planned. The more knowledge you have, the more successful you will be at growing vegetables! And don't forget to check the size and type of your compost pile.

Organic gardening also faces a problem with insects. You'll need to protect your ripening fruits from predators by using physical barriers and biological controls, such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which kills caterpillars and other insect pests. To ensure that your crops don't become stressed, rotate them. A garden with too many vegetables may not be sustainable. This is why organic gardening is so important for pest control.

Organic gardening takes a lot of effort. You must ensure that your garden is clean and free from disease to have a productive garden. You should regularly remove diseased or dying plants, and keep the garden weed-free. Diversity and weed prevention are possible by using a variety plants and vegetables. This will attract beneficial insects and encourage diversity. A variety of soils and environments will also enhance biodiversity. The right soil nutrients can help your plants thrive.

gardening tips for home

Gardening organically requires that you have good soil quality. By using untreated, open-pollinated seeds, you'll be preserving the soil's natural fertility and avoiding the use of synthetic pesticides. Those who are serious about organic gardening should only use certified-organic seed, which are a blend of aged compost and organic nutrients. Untreated seeds guarantee a double yield.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
