How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
