Pruning Lemon Balm

house gardening tips

Lemon balm is a perennial that thrives in a sunny place. The plant can tolerate temperatures as low as -20degF. The root system will rot if the plant is over-watered. If you want to get the best results, keep it indoors in an outdoor pot. Lemon balm should be planted in an area with sufficient sunlight to prevent it from browning and withering.

If you're planting lemon balm seedlings outdoors, start the seeds early in spring. The seeds should be kept in a cool place and properly watered. The plants will need to be kept moist until they germinate. You can also take the cuttings of an established plant to make a new tree. Just remember not to store the cuttings, as the fragrant oil will quickly dissipate. To make the cuttings, you should wait until the end of the growing season.

herb gardening in containers for beginners

Growing lemon balm is a simple task. This plant needs to live in cool areas with good air circulation. Although it prefers moist soil, it can withstand light drought. Lemon balm should be planted in the shade if you live somewhere hot. When the right conditions are met, these plants can grow to 3 feet tall. For best results, you should prune the plants after they have flowered and after the leaves have turned brown.

Lemon balm thrives in bright light and is a vigorous plant. The best way to get the plants divided is in the fall. To loosen the root ball, you can dig around the plant. If you'd like to divide smaller plants, you can transplant them or self-seed them. If you're growing self-seeders, you can take the entire piece and transplant it into a bigger container.

Lemon balm is able to be grown in all soil types. A well-drained, fertile and organic soil is necessary for the growth of lemon balm. Because lemon balm can spread to your entire garden, it is best to plant it in a shaded area. There are many cultivars that you can use to grow lemon basil in your yard. These plants can also easily be purchased through online specialty shops and nurseries. It is best to buy them from a reliable source such as True Leaf Market or Burpee.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
