The Virginia Planting Guide 2020: Serious Gardening

florida herb gardening 101

Virginia's colonial era saw serious gardening. In those days, people who were less fortunate grew heirloom fruits and vegetables for their survival. The rich and powerful constructed grand estates along James River with elaborate gardens. They kept up to date with all the latest gardening information and imported plants from England. My friends and I have similar wish lists to the early plantation owners. It's no surprise so many plants are adapted Virginian climate.

Virginia can be grown kale despite the conditions of the soil. It can withstand temperatures down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Kale isn't as resilient as tomatoes and other vegetables. It should be planted in a sunny spot. Aphids are able to destroy the leaves of your Kale plant and make it impossible for you to harvest. It is also unable to tolerate heat, so a garden at 90 degrees Fahrenheit could result in it flowering. The flowers will become inedible when it receives direct sunlight.

Virginia is an ideal place to grow vegetables. Virginia is mostly in Zone 7 but there are some areas that are Zone 8. Cabbage thrives in mild springs and autumns, making it a good choice to grow in gardens. Peas don’t need much space. They thrive in raised beds. You should be aware that peas can be favored by deer, squirrels, and rabbits.

The high humidity and heat of Virginia in the summer months makes eggplants thrive. It's easy for them to become irritated and they won't be hardy. You can select different varieties for your region depending on how much sun you need. No matter what type of garden you have, eggplants can survive in the heat. It is best to plant them in autumn and winter.

Early gardeners in Virginia participated in an active seed trade. John Custis sent cuttings containing his plants to London. Seedmen also advertised a variety of plants. A variety of books on this hobby were written, and some were even published. A growing number were kept under the supervision of the government during colonial time and maintained by the founders. George Washington experimented on the production plant, and Thomas Hamilton and Jefferson are both well-known for maintaining meticulous gardens.

Virginia's colonial era was a significant time for gardening. In the early 1900s, wealthy people began building country houses that included elaborate gardens. Their estates were reminiscent of early plantations. Men of color were the first landscape architects in colonial times. They created hedges, paths, benches and box-edged gardens. They were more influenced than their English counterparts by other cultures and climates.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in small pots filled with potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination typically takes around ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seeds are big enough, it's time to transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. The leaves can then be dried on paper towels, screens, or other suitable surfaces. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
