You might consider adding a stone bench to your space. You can use this seat as an accent or as a place to rest. You can place the seat on the pathway, to conceal it, or in between flower beds. Or, you could use an old wooden or antique suitcase to carry white asters, petunias and other plants that prefer containers. Whether you want to make an old wheelbarrow into a beautiful planter or repurpose it for a unique purpose, there are endless possibilities for the creative gardener.

FAQ

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening relies on nutrient rich water rather than soil to provide nutrients for plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

What vegetables can you grow together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They can complement each other because tomatoes require heat to mature, and peppers require lower temperatures for their optimal flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

How do you prepare the soil for a vegetable garden?

Preparing soil for a vegetable garden is easy. First, you should remove all weeds around the area where you want to plant vegetables. Add organic matter such as leaves, composted manure or grass clippings, straw, wood chips, and then water. Let the plants grow by watering well.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
