Tips for planting in the garden

garden tips and ideas

Before planting your plants, it is important to identify the type of soil that you have. Different plants need different amounts. Check the tag on your plant for details. Some plants need full sun and others need shade. The texture of the soil can help you determine the type of soil that you have. You should try to get a textured soil, which allows young roots to spread out easily.

Preparing the soil is essential before you plant your plants. You should dig a hole twice the size of your plant's container. Once the soil is prepared, you can take it out of its container. Replace the soil around it and water it to keep it moist. Mulch the area with pine needles after it has been planted. It is important to space the plants evenly, since some plants may spread more than other. These measurements will be listed on most tags.

Herb Gardening

If you're going to plant bareroots, lay them in the hole and spread their roots. Fill the hole in with soil and attach them to a stake if possible. Firmen the soil gently around the area to encourage growth. You can then begin adding soil to the holes. After adding soil, water your newly-planted plants. After adding the soil, spray it with a hose and blow it with a garden brush.

Planting plants requires digging a hole twice as big as the root ball. A larger hole allows the roots to grow horizontally and receive more oxygen. The bottom of the root ball should sit above the surrounding grade. You should not dig too deeply as the soil may settle around the trunk. Exceeding soil can create a breeding ground for disease. These can be prevented by spraying.

After planting the plants you need to prepare the rootball. This is important to ensure that the new roots are firmly planted in the ground. This can be done gently by tearing off the sides of rootball. Woody shrubs and trees often have circling roots at the bottom of the ball. By pulling them out, you can straighten them and encourage them to plant new roots. It's simple. And it's easy!

Once you've chosen the type of soil you'll be using, you'll need to consider the planting date. It will depend on your growing zone, the amount of frosts in the area and the type plant you are planting. You will need to know the date of the first frost depending on the species. In most cases, it is possible to plant your plants a few days earlier than the first frost date. Some plants are better suited than others for planting outside.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds must be planted at the latest two weeks before last frost. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination takes approximately ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. Add more potting mixes as necessary. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will prevent them from frost damage and help to reduce water loss.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. A timer can be used to shut off the irrigation system when it is dry.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
