How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. Basil is tolerant to partial shade, but it prefers full sun. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination can take up to ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. A timer can be used to shut off the irrigation system when it is dry.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
