gardening advice

Before you can plot your plot and plan how to plant it, you have to assess it. Before you start planting crops on your allotment there are several things to be aware of. Your soil type will determine the soil type and water requirements for your plot. You can get information from neighbouring plot holders to help you determine the right type of plants for your plot. These tips can help you plan your plot.

Compost bin. Using a compost bin will help you turn your kitchen waste into fertiliser. This will reduce your carbon footprint. A Compos-Twin, or a compost-tumbler, can produce soil material in 14 days. While these compost-tumblers are small, they can hold up to 600 litres.

Soil type. It is vital to have the right soil for all your allotments. You should select a soil that is well-drained and has adequate water if you plan to grow vegetables. When you roll the soil in your hands, it won't form a ball. You should avoid planting seeds in soil that is clayey. Because this can lead to mud building up, and possibly making the soil less nutritious, your plants won’t be able grow well.

Overcrowding a plot is the most common error made by newcomers. Each plant needs adequate space to grow. You will have disappointing crops if you overcrowd the plot. Your plot should be planned so that you don't end up with too many vegetables and too few of the same vegetable. To avoid overloading your plot, be sure to follow the instructions on the packet.

Once the weeds have been cleared, you can start planting. To plant your seeds, you can use small trays or pots. Planting your vegetables can be done with propagators. You can purchase a garden calendar and use it to plan your allotment. It will help you plan what you need to do to your allotment. FAQ

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. Therefore, 100 pounds of seeds is required for a surface of 10 feet x 10 feet (3 m x 3 m).

What is the difference in hydroponics and aquaponics?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. It's like having your farm right in your home.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
