How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
