How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
