FAQ

When should you plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. When plants are growing, place them in bright indirect lighting. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

What should you do first when you start a garden?

The first step to starting a garden is to prepare it. This includes adding organic matter like composted cow manure, grass clippings leaves, straw, and so on, which will help to provide plant nutrients. Next, you will plant your seeds or seedlings directly into the prepared holes. Then, water well.

What is a planting plan?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
