How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
